Sherry Robb
Sherry Robb, an iconic literary agent, talent manager, and producer whose influence resonated across publishing, television, and film for over five decades, has passed away at the age of 81. Her extraordinary career helped shape the paths of countless stars, from beloved actress Betty White and music legend Mary Wilson to visionary screenwriter Ronald D Moore. She also played a key role in bringing Robert Graysmith’s seminal true crime book Zodiac to light the very story that would later inspire David Fincher’s acclaimed 2007 film of the same name.
After a prolonged battle with congestive heart disease, Robb passed away peacefully on February 14. A memorial celebrating her life and legacy will take place on June 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the historic Hollywood Forever Cemetery, where admirers and industry colleagues will gather to honor her remarkable journey.
Robb’s instinct for storytelling and her uncanny eye for talent left an indelible imprint on pop culture. It was her belief in Robert Graysmith’s chilling account of a still-unsolved string of murders in late 1960s San Francisco that brought Zodiac to the shelves in 1986. That book not only became a bestseller but went on to be immortalized on screen, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, and Mark Ruffalo.
Her legacy extended deeply into television. Robb was instrumental in launching the career of Ronald D Moore by helping him bring his early scripts to Paramount, where he became one of the masterminds behind Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the celebrated reboot of Battlestar Galactica.
In 1983, a heartfelt conversation with Betty White about grief and healing after the death of her husband, Allen Ludden, inspired the book Pet Love, which marked White’s first foray into publishing and began a fruitful literary chapter in her career.
Music fans also owe a debt to Robb. She championed Mary Wilson’s Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme, published in 1986, which quickly became a cornerstone of music autobiographies. These works were just two among over 100 debut author journeys Robb successfully guided.
Before stepping into the world of entertainment, Robb earned a bachelor’s degree from Whittier College and a master’s in social work from Smith College. She began her career in therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital and taught at institutions including Boston State College and the University of Massachusetts.
Her pivot into publishing began with a major house in New York before she co-founded a literary agency with Bart Andrews in 1981, where they curated titles including a tribute to I Love Lucy published in 1976.
Robb’s entrepreneurial spirit led her to found AFH Talent Agency in 1989 and later The Robb Co. in 2003, a boutique firm focused on elevating actors and writers. Her creative vision continued to flourish with the launch of Robb Squad Film Co. in 2020 alongside director Marc Martinez. Together they produced the 2024 feature The Memory in My Heart, fulfilling Robb’s mission to empower storytellers by generating original content.
Her contributions were formally recognized in 2019 when she was inducted into the Personal Managers Hall of Fame. She also served as a respected judge for UCLA’s Script Competition Showcase and consulted for USC’s prestigious film master’s program continuing to inspire the next generation of creatives.
Sherry Robb was more than a power player behind the scenes. She was a nurturer of voices, a finder of truth in story, and a guardian of authenticity in an ever-evolving industry. Her legacy is not only etched in books and screen credits, but in the lives and careers she elevated with unwavering belief and brilliance.
