Simon Cowell and son Eric in 2024.
In a heartfelt feature for this week’s issue of PEOPLE, Simon Cowell offers a rare glimpse into the emotional journey that reshaped his life one marked by the devastating loss of his beloved parents and the unexpected redemption found through fatherhood.
The America’s Got Talent creator and judge became a father in 2014 when he and longtime partner Lauren Silverman welcomed their son, Eric. Now 11, Eric is named in honor of Cowell’s late father, a tribute that holds deep emotional resonance.
“My parents were everything to me,” Cowell reflects. “When they passed my dad in 1999, and my mum in 2015 it left a space in my life that nothing could fill. Then Eric came along, and in many ways, he saved me. The love I feel for him is more powerful than I ever could have imagined.”

Cowell describes this love as transformative and grounding a force that brought joy, purpose, and clarity back into his world. “That moment when it hits you the unconditional love for your child it’s beyond words. Truly remarkable.”
Since becoming a father, Cowell has introduced Eric to many facets of his life from bike rides and swimming to behind-the-scenes moments at AGT. Watching his son light up with excitement during live tapings has redefined Cowell’s connection to the show. “Now, I view performances through Eric’s eyes. Would he find this act fun? Is he laughing? That joy is infectious.”
Though known to many as the sharp-tongued judge behind American Idol, The X Factor, and AGT, Cowell admits fatherhood has shifted his priorities in profound ways.
“Success means very little without the people you love to share it with,” he says. “That may sound like a cliché, but it’s true. Without Eric, there would be a void a lack of meaning. He changed everything.”
These days, Cowell embraces a healthier work-life balance, learning when to pause and recharge. “You make better decisions when your mind is rested. When I’m tired, I step away. I’ve learned not to push through exhaustion clarity comes from rest.”
So, what’s his idea of the perfect day? “Time with Eric,” he smiles. “We ride bikes, walk the dogs, splash in the pool, or browse toys together. And with our new pup, Pebbles, life is full of play and movement.”
Simon Cowell’s story is a reminder that amid loss, love can return in the most unexpected ways and sometimes, in the shape of a little boy on a bicycle.
