Benny Blanco for InStyle.
Benny Blanco is reflecting on his modest beginnings in the bustling city of New York. In an insightful interview with InStyle, published on Wednesday, June 4, the prolific music producer nostalgically recounted the unorthodox sleeping arrangements he experienced during his early DJ years in the Big Apple.
At 37, Blanco looks back fondly on those formative days when he opted out of high school in Virginia to pursue a passion for music amidst the vibrant party scene in Brooklyn. Without a portable laptop, Blanco and his friends embarked on lengthy drives with nothing more than an iMac G5 monitor, lugging the hefty computer between gigs across the city.
As night fell, finding a place to rest was often a challenge. Blanco recalls, “We would sleep in the train station, a park, or even the McDonald’s in Times Square,” reminiscing about those times with equal parts humor and disbelief.
His parents, unaware of his precarious lodging choices, would have been utterly horrified. “Are you kidding me? My mom would have lost her mind if she knew I was sleeping on a park bench!” he candidly shared with the publication.
Throughout the interview, Blanco also shed light on his mother’s reactions to his budding career and collaborations with the biggest names in the industry. Recalling a memorable conversation, he said, “I was like, ‘Mom, I’m going in the studio with Britney Spears,’” referring to their work on Spears’ 2008 hit Circus. His mother’s disbelief was palpable: “She was like, ‘No, you’re not.’ And I was like, ‘I swear, I am!’ Even as my songs gained popularity, she’d ask, ‘Yeah, but what’s your backup plan?’”
Benny Blanco’s impressive repertoire includes hits like TiK ToK by Kesha, Teenage Dream by Katy Perry, Moves Like Jagger and Payphone by Maroon 5, Diamonds by Rihanna, and Dynamite by Taio Cruz.
In March, Blanco, along with his fiancée Selena Gomez, released their collaborative album I Said I Love You First. According to a press release, the album offers fans “a unique window into their relationship,” and was created through a shared sense of comfort that allowed them to produce art reflecting their authentic experiences. The album “chronicles their entire story—before they met, falling in love, and looking to what the future holds.”
Selena Gomez, 32, spoke to Rolling Stone in March about her musical crossroads and the support she found in Blanco. “I was very frustrated and kind of confused on where I wanted to go next musically,” she confessed, adding that Blanco was a crucial source of support. “We had been together for a while, and obviously I would confide in him. I couldn’t figure out my sound. It helps that he knows a little bit about music,” she continued. This collaboration proved to be unlike any other, characterized by an organic process that led to their shared creative breakthroughs.
Benny Blanco’s journey from humble beginnings to producing chart-topping hits alongside some of music’s brightest stars underscores his relentless dedication and the serendipitous paths that have defined his remarkable career.
