Morten Harket.
A-ha’s iconic frontman, Morten Harket, renowned for his unique voice and magnetic stage presence, has revealed a deeply personal battle his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. The 65-year-old singer recently underwent two significant brain surgeries last year, aiming to manage his symptoms. Grappling with uncertainty, Morten shared, “I’m not sure if singing will remain part of my future, but I plan to listen to the professionals’ guidance on what comes next.”
In a heartfelt announcement on June 4, A-ha updated fans via their official website with a message penned by biographer Jan Omdahl. “Recognize him as A-ha’s unforgettable frontman, a singer endowed with divine talent, who balances his role as a reluctant pop star with his life as a solo artist, songwriter, and father,” Omdahl began. Yet recently, he added, Morten has faced an internal struggle with his own health.
Harket candidly admitted that while he initially kept his diagnosis private, he ultimately recognized the importance of maintaining “peace and quiet” to prevent his condition from worsening. “Accepting the diagnosis wasn’t difficult,” he said. Reflecting on wisdom from his father, he continues to embrace a pragmatic approach: ‘I use whatever works.’
“Managing medication and its side effects is a delicate balance,” he elaborated. “Every day presents decisions each mimicking the intricate manner in which the body naturally operates, affecting everything from social engagements to daily routines.”
Having performed with A-ha since the 1980s, Morten’s voice remains as recognizable today as it was decades ago. However, he admitted that his voice is now uncertain, casting shadows over his creative future. “The issues with my voice add to the uncertainty. I don’t feel inclined to sing at present, and to me, that’s indicative. I remain open-minded about what might work, but I don’t expect to regain complete technical mastery.”
Commenting on his creative expression, he said, “Expressing myself vocally is currently out of the question. Whether that will change, I can’t say. However, at moments, I treasure the chance to sing. Yet, I hold passions beyond music, which are equally vital and true.”
His condition, described as a “never-ending rollercoaster ride,” means that even on good days, when physical symptoms seem absent, intensive effort is required to maintain equilibrium between medication, internal brain signals, rest, and mindset, said Omdahl.
Despite challenges, Morten reassured fans, urging them not to worry, “Concentrate on confronting real issues. I assure you, I’m in good hands.” He reflected on the discomfort of publicizing his condition but acknowledged, “Keeping this a secret is more burdensome than sharing my private struggles.”
Morten’s musical journey began with Paul Waaktaar-Savoy and Magne Furuholmen in 1982. The trio achieved meteoric success with their debut album, Hunting High and Low, launching the worldwide hit, Take On Me.
Parkinson’s disease is recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a progressive disorder affecting the nervous system. Symptoms vary, encompassing involuntary movements, muscle rigidity, and coordination challenges, often intensifying over time. This can involve speech and motor skill difficulties, and potential mental health impacts.
Morten Harket joins a roster of notable figures facing Parkinson’s, including Michael J. Fox, Ozzy Osbourne, and Billy Connolly, each sharing their journeys to raise awareness about this challenging condition.
As Morten navigates his unpredictable journey with Parkinson’s, he stands as a testament to resilience, inspiring fans and contemporaries alike to face adversity with courage and an unyielding spirit.
