Model and body positivity advocate Tess Holliday is raising concerns about dwindling diversity in the fashion industry, as the trend toward thinness resurfaces.
While speaking on Good Morning Britain on October 24th, Holliday highlighted how the surge in GLP-1 weight loss medications is impacting the hiring of plus-size models.
“I think that, collectively, our society has moved to a place where thinness is in and body positivity and curvy is no longer popular for a lot of brands,” she explained.
Holliday addressed hosts Rob Rinder and Kate Garraway, elaborating on the issue.
“That’s what we’re seeing reflected on runways and magazines and in the media,” she said. “My plus-size colleagues around the world – they’re not really working. So it’s been really disheartening to see.”
She acknowledged that medications like Ozempic and Mounjaro have been beneficial for many but criticized their overuse since becoming mainstream. Holliday conveyed her dismay about the overall decline in diversity since 2020.
“I think ever since 2020, there’s been a rapid decline in diversity overall,” she admitted. “So I think it’s kinda the perfect storm of the jabs and where our culture is at right now.”
Holliday later shared her interview clip on TikTok, clarifying her perspective. She wrote, “Thanks to @GoodMorningBritain for having me on, even if they did open the segment saying I blamed GlP1’s for the fall of the body positivity movement 🙃 (def didn’t) but stand by that we deserve respect, regardless of how we show up in the world. ❤️”
Her devoted followers praised her unwavering advocacy for body positivity.
“You are so articulate and strong…and stunning 🔥❤️” wrote Hilaria Baldwin.
Another follower commented, “Thank you for continuing to fight for diversity and the message that we all matter regardless of health status or size. ❤️”
Previously, Holliday addressed similar concerns when responding to an online critic suggesting she take Ozempic for weight loss. In a TikTok video, she disputed the idea that judgment would lessen if she decided to lose weight.
“The funny thing is, you would judge. It’s kind of like when you are plus size and not palatable, you’re kind of screwed either way,” Holliday argued. “You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.”
Interacting with supportive followers, Holliday echoed a sentiment of frustration over societal judgment, regardless of one’s choices.
“They judge us no matter what we do! Even when a plus-size gets slim and goes to the gym, it’s still wrong! Let us live our own lives 💕,” a user noted, to which Holliday replied, “Yuppppp.”
