Madison Square Garden celebrates Billy Joel's 100th lifetime show at Madison Square Garden on July 18, 2018 in New York City.
In a poignant and heartfelt moment, Alexis Roderick Joel, wife of legendary musician Billy Joel, has broken her silence to address the recent health struggles faced by the beloved artist. Sharing a personal message on Billy Joel’s official Instagram account on Monday, May 26, Alexis, 43, expressed deep gratitude for the public’s outpouring of support.
“Gratitude fills our hearts for the overwhelming outflow of love and support,” she wrote.
“The swift diagnosis and exceptional medical attention we received brings hope. Bill is cherished by countless fans, and to us, he is the anchor of our family life—both as a father and husband.”
The 76-year-old icon, affectionately known as the “Piano Man,” announced just days earlier, on Friday, May 23, that he would be canceling all scheduled concerts following a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) — a serious neurological condition.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, NPH is caused by a buildup of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s ventricles, which can expand and put pressure on nearby brain tissue. Common symptoms include difficulties with walking, memory problems, and urinary incontinence — all of which can significantly impact daily life.
In a follow-up Instagram post, Billy’s team revealed that his NPH diagnosis had already affected his hearing, vision, and balance, leading to noticeable challenges during live performances. Doctors have since advised him to pause performing and begin targeted physical therapy to aid in his recovery.
His most recent show took place at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, back in February.
In her continued message, Alexis reflected on the family’s journey and emphasized their hope for the future. The couple, who married in 2015 after six years of dating, are parents to two daughters — Della Rose and Remy Anne, whom Alexis described as the family’s enduring sources of strength.
“Our faith in his recovery remains steadfast,” she added.
“Anticipation grows as we look forward to reuniting with all of you in the times to come.”
Following the news, Billy Joel has received an outpouring of support from fans, fellow musicians, and family — including his former wife, Christie Brinkley, and their daughter, Alexa Ray Joel.
On Saturday, May 24, Brinkley, 71, posted a touching message to Instagram:
“Dear Billy, the entire Brinkley clan sends abundant love and best wishes for a swift, complete recovery.”
She continued with a fond memory:
“While searching for adorable photos of you and Alexa, I stumbled upon a recent concert clip. It brought laughter but also a reminder of the immense joy and spirit you spread—how you unite an arena of strangers into a cozy living room feeling, swaying together in harmony.”
Brinkley concluded with heartfelt words of encouragement:
“I surely echo the sentiment of everyone present in those rooms when I urge you to prioritize your health. We all long for your return to the spotlight—you’re OUR piano man, and your melodies are a balm we perpetually crave. Wishing you a speedy recovery and better days ahead!”
