EXCLUSIVE: In a surprising move, Prime Video has decided not to proceed with a fourth season of The Wheel of Time. This decision, following the Season 3 finale on April 17, was reached after extensive deliberations. In today’s economic climate, financial considerations outweighed creative satisfaction among the streamer’s executives.
The television adaptation of Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson’s epic fantasy series—produced by Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios—paved the way for high-end fantasy on Prime Video, preceding even The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Led by Rosamund Pike as Moiraine Damodred, the show premiered in 2021 to record-breaking numbers, becoming one of Prime Video’s Top 5 launches of all time.
Though Season 3 received praise, viewership declined compared to earlier seasons. It dropped from Nielsen’s Top 10 after three weeks but briefly returned at #10 following the finale. Global performance, however, failed to offset the high production costs, prompting Prime Video and Sony TV to halt further seasons after exhausting other options.
The creators tailored the Season 3 finale to offer fans a sense of closure amid renewal uncertainty—an effort both praised and mourned by the series’ loyal fanbase.
Despite the cancellation, the show has grown critically stronger each season, scoring a remarkable 97% on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 3, up from 86% and 81% in prior seasons. Prime Video will continue to back its Emmy campaign for this final chapter.
The cast includes Daniel Henney (Lan Mandragoran), Josha Stradowski (Rand al’Thor), and others, with Rafe Judkins serving as showrunner and executive producer. Additional EPs include Rick Selvage, Larry Mondragon, Ted Field, and Rosamund Pike.
