In the cinematic world, the anticipation is soaring as a sequel to 2022’s blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick edges closer to reality. The original film’s stellar cast and crew have expressed their eagerness to return to the skies even if it means another ride through the proverbial danger zone.
Jay Ellis, who embodied the character Reuben “Payback” Fitch, captured the cast’s enthusiasm, telling Fox News Digital in November 2022, “My whole cast, we would all be there in a heartbeat. We would be grateful to be there.” Such eagerness is understandable given Top Gun: Maverick’s astronomical success – it stands as the second highest grossing film of 2022 and the pinnacle of Tom Cruise’s illustrious career.

The film followed Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Cruise, as he mentored a new league of fighter pilots for a high stakes mission. Among those under his wing were Glen Powell, Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Manny Jacinto, and Greg Tarzan Davis. Recounting his experience, Pullman shared with Us Weekly in June 2022 the invaluable education he received watching Cruise in action. “I had to just transform into a sponge and just absorb absorb absorb because it was a new lesson every day. I’ve never seen anyone approach filmmaking the way he does,” Pullman said. “I’ve also never seen someone that far into their career who still has such drive, has such curiosity, has such passion, has such a reluctance to settle…”
The excitement surrounding a potential sequel lies not just with the cast but extends behind the scenes. Christopher McQuarrie, a frequent collaborator of Cruise, confirmed during a May 2025 appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that conception for a third Top Gun movie was well underway. “It wasn’t hard,” McQuarrie stated about developing the narrative. “…it’s the emotion” that makes these films tick, not just the high intensity action scenes.

Jennifer Connelly, hoping to reprise her role, expressed her readiness in an April 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I’ll be there. I’m ready. We had such a great time shooting it,” she shared, while staying light on plot details, adding, “I’m his biggest fan. I think he’s so great.”
Miles Teller, another key player, highlighted the decision ultimately rests with Cruise. “That would be great, but that’s all up to TC,” Teller told Entertainment Tonight in July 2022. Conversations have been happening, he acknowledged, but it’s Cruise’s call.
For Glen Powell, who remained coy during a January 2023 Variety interview by stating his involvement was “above my pay grade,” time might bring more clarity. “It feels like it’s less vague than it was at one point, so we’ll see,” he remarked.
Jay Ellis shared similar sentiments with People in October 2022, stressing his enthusiasm for another installment. “We’d love to do it again. We’d love to be with Tom again,” Ellis affirmed, expressing his readiness to return to the skies.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed a third installment wouldn’t be pursued until Cruise completes his work on the Mission: Impossible franchise. “He’s in the middle of shooting Mission: Impossible, he’s got a lot of very difficult hard stunts he’s doing,” Bruckheimer noted in January 2023, emphasizing that Cruise’s current commitments take precedence.
Director Joseph Kosinski discussed the necessity of having a compelling story to tell in a December 2022 Deadline interview, wondering aloud, “Is there another story that is compelling enough that we need to go back?” With Maverick’s character still dynamic and far from settling down, the possibilities seem endless.
As the world waits, the whispers and hopes surrounding the future of Top Gun continue to ripple through Hollywood, eager fingers crossed for another cinematic mission that takes us to the skies and beyond.
