Kevin Costner in 'Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1'
The world of entertainment buzzes with speculation as Kevin Costner’s anticipated Horizon sequel stalls amid serious allegations and an elusive release date. The ambitious four part Western series began with Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, which premiered in June 2024. Initially, the sequel was set for an August 2024 release. However, following Horizon’s lukewarm box office turnout, New Line Cinema reportedly withdrew its plans for the second installment. Thus far, the film has only graced the screens of Venice International Film Festival in September 2024 and Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February, leaving fans and critics in the dark about its theatrical debut.
Amid the uncertainty, Isabelle Fuhrman who portrays Diamond Kittredge voiced optimism about the sequel’s release in a January discussion with Screen Rant, saying it is “coming pretty soon.” Yet, she tempered expectations, acknowledging, “Actors are usually the last to know in these sorts of things.” Relishing the Venice premiere, she praised the audience’s reception, seeing the film for the first time herself.
However, by May, Fuhrman expressed doubt. “I really hope that we get to see the second one,” she candidly shared in another Screen Rant interview, spotlighting the ambiguity even among the cast. “I have no clue what Kevin’s planning, but he’s probably planning something.”
The Horizon saga took a darker turn when, on May 27, Kevin Costner and his production teams faced legal challenges from stunt performer Devyn LaBella. According to documents acquired by Us Weekly, LaBella accused them of sexual discrimination, harassment, and fostering a hostile work environment. Her allegations included being subject to “a violent unscripted unscheduled rape scene directed by Kevin Costner” in May 2023. Costner’s lawyer, Marty Singer, staunchly refuted these allegations, declaring LaBella’s claims as baseless and inconsistent with her conduct and the facts.
Despite the cloud of controversy enveloping Horizon, Costner remains resolute to complete the series. During the Venice Film Festival, he conveyed his determination: “I don’t know how I’m going to make Chapter 3 right now. But I’m going to make it. I have to hurry and not let the rock fall back downhill. I’ve gotta go put my hands on it again and start to push it up. It’s a rope that I cannot let go of.”
While the conclusion of Horizon hangs in balance, the drama off screen fuels the narrative with as much intrigue as the Western epic itself. Fans are left to wonder will Horizon gallop onto screens once more, or will it remain a tantalizing mystery in the western sunset?
