‘Steven Universe’
In an exciting development unveiled at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Prime Video has announced a sequel series centered around the fascinating character Lars Barriga. Titled Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, this new venture promises to delve deep into the universe introduced by the original show. Spearheading this project is none other than the mastermind behind the original series, Rebecca Sugar, alongside supervising director Ian Jones-Quartey, both taking on executive producer roles. The initiative is backed by Cartoon Network Studios and marks a significant expansion of the Steven Universe saga.
The announcement came as Rebecca Sugar treated attendees at Annecy to a live performance of one of her original compositions penned for Cartoon Network’s acclaimed series, Adventure Time. In a session that also involved Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, there was an unveiling of Adventure Time: Side Quests, a spin-off, along with the renewal of Teen Titans Go! for its tenth season.
The plot of Lars of the Stars promises intrigue and adventure. The show is set to portray Lars Barriga as he navigates life as an eternal teenager and space outlaw. Alongside his crew of pirates, Lars embarks on thrilling escapades, smuggling contraband, dodging law enforcement, and revealing the deepest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire. Should Amazon’s Prime Video give this series the green light, it will mark a notable shift as the first Steven Universe show not to debut on Cartoon Network. The original series left an indelible mark lasting from 2013 to 2019, followed by a feature-length film and the series Steven Universe Future, which concluded in 2020.
Cartoon Network’s additional announcement regarding Teen Titans Go! further excited fans. The renewal of the show solidifies its status as the longest-running DC animated series to date. While the premiere date remains under wraps, the new season promises more (mis)adventures with Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Raven. Luke Cormican, Peggy Regan, and Sam Register continue their roles as executive producers, with WB Animation at the helm.
Annecy didn’t stop there with surprises. Attendees were treated to first-look clips and concept art from a myriad of new projects. This included Foster’s Funtime for Imaginary Friends, a preschool spin-off of Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends by Craig McCracken; The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball, which symbolizes the seventh revival season of Ben Bocquelet’s The Amazing World of Gumball; and J.G. Quintel’s SuperMutant Magical Academy, the forthcoming Adult Swim series based on Jillian Tamaki’s popular webcomic. Each announcement paints a bright future for animated storytelling, captivating both young and mature audiences with its diverse, imaginative narratives.
