David Geffen, Donovan Michaels, Lady Jemma Mornington and Arpad Busson attend Vogue World: Paris at Place Vendome on June 23, 2024 in Paris, France.
David Geffen and his estranged husband, David Armstrong, are at the heart of a glamorous yet contentious divorce saga, as Armstrong formally responds to Geffen’s filing this past May. After a whirlwind romance that culminated in marriage in March 2023, Geffen filed for divorce on May 16, citing irreconcilable differences, according to documents obtained from PEOPLE. Armstrong, just 32, is seeking spousal support, attorney’s fees, and other relief deemed appropriate by the court in his official response, dated May 27.
The billionaire music executive, valued at $8.7 billion by Forbes, initially proposed to cover Armstrong’s legal fees and spousal support. While Geffen declared their separation date as February 22, Armstrong intriguingly left this date “TBD” in his statement.
Both parties will need to divulge their financial affairs, including income, expenses, and property valuations, in compliance with a court directive issued on May 27. This mandate gives each 60 days to share such details. Armstrong, known also by his professional alias Donovan Michaels, is a model and dancer who had maintained a relatively low profile alongside Geffen.

Geffen’s illustrious career includes co-founding music giants like Asylum Records, Geffen Records, and DGC Records, along with the animation powerhouse DreamWorks Animation. Financial analysts note that the California legal system may impact Armstrong’s potential settlement, as the state’s laws stipulate spousal support for half the marriage duration, pointing to a likely one-year support term. Moreover, dividends from Geffen’s substantial stock interests remain separate, potentially limiting Armstrong’s financial gains, as reported by TMZ.
The couple had kept much of their life shielded from public scrutiny, save for past social media highlights, such as a holiday Instagram post shared by Geffen in December 2021, captioned, “Merry Christmas indeed!” Geffen, who retired after revolutionizing the music and entertainment industries, famously came out in 1992 and dated Cher briefly in the early 70s.
As their high-profile parting unfolds, the spotlight remains squarely on the legal and fiscal maneuvering in one of the industry’s most compelling divorces in recent memory. Geffen and Armstrong’s financial disclosures and subsequent court proceedings will no doubt draw keen attention from both the public and media circles.
