Julia Quinn, the celebrated author behind the beloved Bridgerton series, found herself at the heart of a heated debate when Netflix’s adaptation introduced a major character change transforming Michael Stirling into Michaela Stirling. Though she anticipated a strong response, Quinn admitted she was wholly unprepared for the intensity of the backlash.
“I knew it would be a big deal,” she told Us Weekly, noting that the gender swap sparked even more controversy than the show’s previous shifts in racial representation. At 55, while serving as a judge for The Novelry’s Next Big Story contest, Quinn reflected on the public reaction: “What I didn’t expect was the sheer level of cruelty from some fans.”
She clarified that the change had not blindsided her she had been in discussions with the showrunner and was fully informed before the adaptation aired. In the original novel When He Was Wicked, Francesca Bridgerton falls for Michael Stirling, the cousin of her late husband, John. Netflix’s third season introduces viewers to Francesca (played by Hannah Dodd) and her whirlwind romance with John (Victor Alli), ending with the surprise debut of Michaela Stirling (portrayed by Masali Baduza), setting the stage for a new chapter.
“I had more time to process the change than everyone else,” Quinn said. What truly unsettled her, however, wasn’t disagreement but the personal attacks: “I didn’t expect people to call me names, accuse me of selling out, or say, ‘Go deposit your big fat check.’”
Unshaken, Quinn reminded fans that the original books remain untouched. “The book still exists. I’m not rewriting it. Now you just have both versions—one on the page, one on the screen.”
She also emphasized her continued commitment to preserving the emotional integrity of Francesca’s storyline. “It was already decided. It was happening,” she said of the show’s decision. “The heart of the story is their shared grief both characters mourning John, the person they each loved. That emotional guilt is essential.”
As Netflix moves ahead with season 4, which will shift focus to Benedict and Sophie’s romance, fans eagerly anticipate how Francesca and Michaela’s bond will unfold. Quinn expressed genuine excitement: “I think it’s going to be beautiful. Anything that helps more people feel seen in a love story is a win.”
She also shared why Francesca’s narrative stands apart in her series. “Of all the books, that one is the most distinct. It has a very different emotional tone.” The adaptation, she promised, will aim to honor that depth.
With season 4 set to premiere in 2026, the Bridgerton saga continues to enchant its global audience eager to discover whose story will be told next on Wisteria-draped screens.
