Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man in 'The Avengers'.
Chris Evans shared with ScreenRant his apprehension about feeling “left out of the party” when Avengers: Doomsday premieres in 2026. This comes years after he stepped away from his iconic role as Steve Rogers/Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“It’s heart-tugging not to reunite with the crew, but I have no doubt they’re crafting something extraordinary,” Evans remarked on the making of the sequel to 2019’s Endgame. Numerous familiar faces from Evans’ Avengers days like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, and Paul Rudd are slated to appear in Doomsday.
Chris Evans is in a bittersweet mood over his absence from Avengers: Doomsday. In a conversation published on June 9, in connection with his upcoming film Materialists, the 43-year-old actor fondly recounted his close ties with friends and associates, including Robert Downey Jr., and filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo the powerhouse duo behind Infinity War and Endgame as they converge in London for the fifth Avengers film.
“Pedro’s there right now,” Evans noted about his Materialists co-star Pedro Pascal, who is set to reprise Mister Fantastic in the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps in Doomsday. Evans, cherished by fans for his portrayal of Steve Rogers/Captain America in the MCU, began this journey with Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011, culminating with Endgame in 2019.
“Missing from the action definitely stirs a pang. It’s a tinge of nostalgia, but I’m guessing what they’re creating is jaw-dropping, and it will sting a little more once it’s released very much like you were left out of the bash,” Evans expressed about the ongoing Doomsday production, which sees Downey Jr. revisiting his Marvel tenure as the antagonistic Doctor Doom.
Appearances by Evans’ Marvel colleagues like Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, and Paul Rudd will be featured in Doomsday. The ensemble cast of the Fantastic Four, the popular Thunderbolts, and various talents from the X-Men series will also make an appearance.
Despite Avengers: Endgame depicting Evans’ Steve Rogers retiring the Captain America mantle, the 2019 film was not Evans’ final foray into the MCU. He made an unexpected guest appearance as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the 2024 film Deadpool & Wolverine, a nod to his earlier cinematic efforts in the 2000s as the Fantastic Four member, predating his tenure as Captain America.

Previously debunking rumors of his participation in Doomsday, Evans rejected such claims in an Esquire interview in January. When inquired by Deadline’s report from December 2024 about his alleged involvement in Doomsday, he clarified, “It’s simply inaccurate. It’s a recurring theme, popping up every once in a while since Endgame truth is, I’ve stopped responding.”
“Absolutely not I’m delightfully retired,” he asserted at that point.
