David Muir.
David Muir, the face of ABC’s World News Tonight since 2014 and America’s most-watched news anchor, is opening a window into a side of his life rarely seen by the public—the quiet moments when the cameras stop rolling. Known for covering global milestones, from the operation that killed Osama bin Laden to live broadcasts from Vatican City, Muir’s life beyond the headlines is filled with deeply personal reflections and peaceful escapes.
Though he’s received numerous accolades and helped raise a record nine million dollars for the World Food Program, Muir finds his greatest sense of self far from the newsroom, in nature. “I feel most at home outdoors, covered in mud, like during my recent trip to my hometown in upstate New York,” he tells Allnews. “It was pouring rain, and I cherished every drop.”
He recalls time spent with his German short-haired pointer, Axel, as among the most meaningful. “The highlight of my dog’s weekend was a beaver building a dam in the boathouse,” he says with a smile. “And honestly, I spent more time by the lake with him than doing anything else.” For Muir, those still moments on the water bring a wave of childhood memories. “Breathing the same air I did while riding my BMX as a kid is incredibly grounding,” he reflects. “It feels like returning home.”

Muir’s path into journalism was clear from a young age. At just twelve, he became captivated by evening newscasts and admired anchors like Peter Jennings, whom he saw as “the James Bond of news.” That early curiosity led to internships, a journalism degree from Ithaca College, and a rapid ascent that took him from local stations to a national spotlight at ABC News in 2003.
He fondly remembers his early days lugging equipment around in reporters’ cars, eager to learn. “Looking back, those were defining moments,” he says. “I was lucky to have people around me who encouraged my enthusiasm.”
Working alongside broadcast legends like Diane Sawyer remains a career highlight. “She always reminds me we’re colleagues, not just mentor and mentee,” Muir shares. “I’ll never forget sitting beside her in Times Square and thinking, I can’t believe this is real.”
Now in his eleventh year anchoring World News Tonight, Muir feels a deep connection to his audience. Yet behind the camera’s composed presence lies a more relaxed version of the anchor. “I’m usually in jeans under the desk during broadcasts,” he admits with a grin. “We just make sure they’re not visible!”
Despite his seasoned presence, Muir still experiences pre-show nerves and makes a lighthearted ritual of confirming the day with his floor director Michelle. “I’ll glance over and ask, ‘It’s Tuesday, right?’ and she’ll nod. It’s our little tradition,” he laughs.

Muir is also aware of his unexpected social media fame, where fan edits and affectionate nicknames have taken root. “Colleagues send me those TikTok videos asking, ‘When did you become Daddy?’” he chuckles. “It’s amusing. Maybe it’s just an age thing, but I appreciate the love.”
Still, it’s often Axel who gets more public attention. “Some people know Axel as well as they know me,” he says warmly. “It really puts things into perspective he has no idea he’s famous.”
As for what’s ahead, Muir remains committed to evolving in his work. “You have to keep reaching. The moment you stop pushing forward, it’s time to reflect,” he says. “I’m still that eager kid from the newsroom, even more passionate now about the power of journalism.”
World News Tonight with David Muir airs weeknights at 6:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with Muir continuing to seek stories that resonate deeply across the globe.
