Cassie with Sean "Diddy" Combs in 2017.
In a scandalous revelation shaking the hip-hop world, a security guard has recently testified about efforts by Sean “Diddy” Combs to conceal a damaging video. The revelation came during Combs’ ongoing sex trafficking trial in Manhattan, where prosecutors made the video of the assault a key piece of their case. The footage apparently captures Combs attacking his then-girlfriend, Cassie, in a Los Angeles hotel hallway back in March 2016.
According to 33-year-old Eddy Garcia, who took the stand on Thursday, the music mogul had actively sought him out after the violent incident. Combs, fearing the public release of the footage would irreparably tarnish his ‘Puff Daddy’ persona and legendary career, approached Garcia with a proposition. Garcia recounted how Combs repeatedly expressed concern over his career, asserting that the video’s release would destroy him. To prevent such a disaster, Combs handed him a brown paper bag loaded with $100,000, aiming to retrieve what he hoped was the sole copy of the damning footage.
The federal prosecutors assert that the video of Combs beating, kicking, and dragging Cassie not only strengthens their case but also highlights a pattern of behavior stretching over two decades. Combs, who has pled not guilty to the charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, allegedly used his wealth and celebrity status to manipulate and control those around him, the prosecution claims.
Garcia shared that he was frequently in contact with Kristina Khorram, Combs’ chief of staff, after the incident. During one phone call, a noticeably anxious Combs spoke of having had too much to drink and remarked, “with women, one thing leads to another.” Combs was clearly fazed by the prospect of the footage becoming public, according to Garcia, as he spoke rapidly and stuttered.
The plot thickened when, according to Garcia, he received a call on his personal cell phone—a number he hadn’t shared with Khorram only to have Combs again on the line. Assuring Garcia that he seemed “like a good guy,” the rapper reiterated that such a scandal would be devastating. Even after being informed that Garcia couldn’t directly access the server, Combs insisted on his aid, promising an unspecified reward, which Garcia interpreted would be financial.
Following consultation with his boss, Garcia revealed that his superior agreed to sell the video to Combs for $50,000. Combs, reportedly thrilled, dubbed Garcia “Eddy my angel,” believing Garcia could secure the footage on his behalf. Within 48 hours of the assault, Garcia delivered a storage device containing the surveillance video to Combs in exchange for the agreed-upon sum, which Combs doled out from a money counter into a brown bag.
Combs’ conditions were strict: Garcia was bound by a confidentiality agreement imposing a $1 million penalty upon sharing the video. At the time, Garcia earned a mere $10.50 hourly as hotel security, making the payout considerable. Nevertheless, he neglected to thoroughly read the agreement, his main objective being to depart as hastily as possible.
With the money in hand, Garcia’s choices were discreet. He bribed his superior with $50,000, gave another officer $20,000, and kept the remaining $30,000, which financed a used car purchase. To avoid traceability, he avoided banking the cash, maintaining an off-the-record transaction. Combs occasionally checked back to ensure the video remained undiscussed, once greeting Garcia with effusive thanks, exclaiming, “Happy Easter! Eddy, my angel. God is good. God put you in my way for a reason.”
Garcia inquired about potential future work with Combs, who seemed open initially but never followed through. Despite Garcia’s attempts, communication ceased. The clandestine video came to light when CNN broadcasted it last year thanks to another hotel guard who secretly recorded it on his phone to share with his wife.
