Amid a high-profile divorce, Denise Richards’ ex-husband Aaron Phypers has been arrested on charges of spousal abuse. Us Weekly confirmed the arrest incident, which occurred outside the courthouse on the same day Richards was providing final testimony in their contentious divorce case.
An Unexpected Turn in Court
Richards’ lawyer informed Us Weekly that Phypers was charged with \\”spousal abuse.\\” An eyewitness account described the arrest scene, noting that it unfolded outside the courtroom as Phypers was taken away by officers, leaving the onlookers, including Richards herself, in a state of surprise. \\”He’s been arrested outside the court and taken down a nearby escalator. [He] did not come back into [the] hallway,\\” the witness recounted. \\”Denise is here. She’s calm and talking to her team.\\”
Phypers looked \\”confused,\\” according to another observer, who said, \\”he didn’t seem to understand that he was about to get arrested.\\”
Earlier that day, the courtroom proceedings were tense, with Phypers and Richards present as approximately eight officers stood guard near the courtroom doors.
Legal Proceedings Continue
Despite the dramatic arrest, Phypers’ attorney remained silent on the matter when the court reconvened, and the hearing was subsequently extended to November 7. Us Weekly has reached out to Phypers for further comment.
The tumultuous couple, who wed in September 2018, has been locked in legal proceedings after Phypers filed for divorce earlier this year, followed swiftly by Richards seeking a temporary restraining order. She accused her estranged husband of continuous abuse throughout their marriage.
Devastating Allegations
Richards alleged in her petition, \\”Aaron would frequently violently choke me, violently squeeze my head with both hands, tightly squeeze my arms, violently slap me in my face and head, aggressively slam my head into the bathroom towel rack, threaten to kill me, hold me down with his knee on my back to the point where I would have to plead with him to get off me so that he would not kill me and hack into my laptop and phone and download all of my text messages.\\”
Phypers countered these severe allegations: \\”These accusations are completely false and deeply hurtful. Denise and I, like many couples, have faced our share of challenges, but any suggestion of abuse is categorically untrue. I have always tried to approach our marriage with love, patience, and respect.\\”
Ongoing Courtroom Drama
The courtroom has been a stage for multiple testimonies from both parties. On October 8, Phypers denied accusations from his cousin, Dr. Kathleen McAllister, who asserted she saw him hit Richards, leaving her with a black eye. Phypers defended himself, claiming Richards had been drinking and ran into a pole.
Adding yet another layer to the courtroom drama, Aaron’s mother, Patricia Phypers, testified about an incident at the couple’s Calabasas home, alleging, \\”She threw a can opener.\\”
