Patti LaBelle in May 2025.
On Saturday, May 24, the iconic Patti LaBelle celebrated her 81st birthday in spectacular fashion at a packed Barclays Center in New York City during the Queens Tour. Reflecting on her illustrious 65-year career, she expressed her gratitude:
“I’m truly blessed to have people still coming to see our show.”
Joined by musical legends like Gladys Knight, Stephanie Mills, and Chaka Khan, LaBelle dedicated her performance to her son and longtime manager, Zuri Kye Edwards—adding a deeply personal touch to the milestone celebration.
The Grammy Award-winning star, known for her timeless hit “Lady Marmalade,” took a moment early in her set to address the significance of turning 81. She shared candidly with the audience:
“Let me say something. I have so many people who are afraid to say how young they are. Don’t be scared. 81 is wonderful, okay? Happy birthday.”
Her bold words were met with roaring applause and warmth from fans.
As the concert reached its joyous peak, the stage transformed into a whirlwind of love and celebration. Patti was joined by friends, family, and colleagues including her son Zuri, Shelby Joyner, and Walt Reeder Jr. from the Black Promoters Collective—the team behind the Queens Tour.
Encircled by flowers and balloons, LaBelle was visibly moved as she reflected on sharing the stage with fellow soul icons:
“We don’t take that for granted. We are such hardworking women. I’ve been doing it for 65 years, and to still have people come to see our show—we are truly blessed.”
In the midst of the festive energy, Patti didn’t forget to shine a light on her support team.
“I can’t do all of this without my band, my crew, my lighting, my sound, my security—which I don’t need—but I’ve got Will. And this is for my son, Zuri,” she said before being presented with a stunning Goyard Saigon bag.
As 50 Cent’s “In da Club” played in the background, an extravagant birthday cake was revealed, bearing the heartfelt message:
“Happy birthday to the Godmother. Cheers to 81 years young.”
