Richard Gere’s historical Connecticut mansion, previously a sanctuary from the fast paced world of Hollywood, will soon be no more, as the actor relocates to Spain with wife Alejandra and their children. Before this calculated move in late 2024, the Gere couple finalized the sale of their lavish New Canaan residence for an impressive $10.75 million. Yet, the future of this regal property, built in 1938, is now one of erasure, as plans unfold to replace it with a nine property luxury development, shared Hudson Valley House Parts.
The New York based entity, embodying a passion for architectural rescue, has been preserving segments of Gere’s former abode, ensuring glimpses of its grandeur aren’t fully forgotten. Richard Gere and his spouse plan to eventually return stateside, albeit not to these opulent walls they once called home. Traded hands seven months prior for $10.75 million, this masterpiece awaits demolition, clearing space within its 32 acre lot.
Working arduously to conserve what they can, Hudson Valley House Parts has retrieved iconic elements like a cast stone wellhead and steel bay windows from the Gere mansion, as showcased in their Instagram updates. Although PEOPLE approached Hudson Valley House Parts for additional insight, a comment remains forthcoming.
In a twist of irony, Gere, a 75 year old actor celebrated for roles that marked a generation, along with 42 year old Alejandra, cohabited this refined establishment for just two years after securing it from Paul Simon and Edie Brickell in 2022 for a staggering $10.8 million. Local whispers once hinted at Gere’s agricultural aspirations for this historic plot, reported by the New Canaan Advertiser, envisioning it transformed into a functional farm.
The estate in question, a blend of nostalgia and luxury, showcased six bedrooms, eleven bathrooms, expansive gardens, a pool, and a charming guest cottage with three bedrooms, noted a previous Sotheby’s listing. Despite their U.S. roots post marriage in 2018, hints emerged of the Geres’ shift to Alejandra’s Spanish homeland, as Gere indicated a probable relocation during an engaging Vanity Fair Spain interview back in April 2024.
When Gere spoke of Alejandra’s yearning for familial proximity and cultural reconnection, his words resonated with a global audience. “She granted me six years immersed in my world, it’s only just that I reciprocate the favor.”
