In an exclusive chat with PEOPLE at the glitzy premiere of Karate Kid: Legends on May 27, 2025, the ever-charming Ming-Na Wen took us on a nostalgic journey through her illustrious career, focusing on a cherished milestone the 27th anniversary of Disney’s animated classic, Mulan.
Currently basking in the spotlight for her role as Dr. Fong in The Karate Kid franchise’s latest installment, Wen is indelibly etched in the hearts of fans as the spirit behind Mulan. The trailblazing actress originally breathed life into Mulan in Disney’s animated features from 1998 and 2004, returning later for a cameo in the 2020 live-action rendition starring Liu Yifei. Her attachment to the role has only deepened over the years, reflecting a full-circle moment that continues to resonate deeply with audiences old and new.
In her personal sphere, Wen, married for 28 years to Eric Michael Zee, has two children Michaela, 24, and Cooper Dominic Zee, 19 who have grown up loving the saga. Whether they want to or not, but yes, they love Mulan just as much, and I guess they’re not sick of my voice yet, she quipped, her laughter contagious.
Beyond Mulan, Wen’s formidable talents have also been celebrated in her performances as Fennec Shand in The Mandalorian and Agent Melinda May in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., further cementing her status as a luminary in entertainment circles.
I was so excited when [director Jonathan Entwistle] wanted me to participate and be the mom. And I have fallen in love with all the men that are in this as well as [costar Sadie Stanley], Wen divulged about her involvement in Karate Kid: Legends. It’s a great cast. We had an incredible experience, and I cannot wait for the fans to see the film.
