Reneé Rapp, acclaimed for her portrayal of Leighton Murray on the HBO series ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’, has set tongues wagging with her latest single ‘Leave Me Alone’. The track, hinting at her past role, has fueled speculation of a rift, as it seems to subtly criticize the show she’s left behind.
In the expressive second verse, Rapp belts, “I took my sex life with me, now the show ain’t fucking / Leave me alone, bitch, I wanna have fun,” leading many to wonder if this is a pointed message to the series. While HBO Max and Rapp’s representatives remain silent on the matter, the lyrics have undeniably sparked extensive discussion.
‘Leave Me Alone’ arrives following her debut album ‘Snow Angel’ (2023), with anticipation growing for her sophomore project ‘Bite Me’, set to release on August 1.
Rapp captivated viewers with her 2021 debut as Leighton, portraying a young woman’s journey through identity and self-discovery. In a candid 2024 interview with THR, she recalled, “That [show] was the most parallel experience in my life, and I remember doing that specific coming-out scene and not acting at all. At all. I was just sobbing. I see that and I don’t see a character. I’m like, ‘That’s me.’”
As Leighton exited in season three—transferring to MIT—fans bid farewell to a beloved character. The emotional climax was followed by the show’s unexpected cancellation earlier this year.
With her bold and unapologetic musical direction, Reneé Rapp continues to redefine her narrative, shedding the fictional halls of Essex College and carving her own unapologetic path through sound, emotion, and authenticity.
