Scooter Braun, Taylor Swift
Scooter Braun has officially responded to Taylor Swift’s remarkable announcement that she now owns the rights to her entire music catalog. In a brief statement shared with Us Weekly on Friday, May 30, the 43 year old music executive said simply, “I am happy for her.”
Earlier that same day, Taylor Swift, 35, thrilled fans by revealing she had successfully acquired ownership of her complete discography from Shamrock Capital. This milestone follows years of public disputes, beginning when Braun initially purchased her masters through his acquisition of Big Machine Records and later sold them to the investment firm.
In an emotional letter shared with fans, Swift reflected on the long road to reclaiming her music. “I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. But that’s all in the past now. I really get to say these words all of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me.”
She went on to describe the moment as the fulfillment of her greatest dream. “To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it. To my fans, you know how important this has been to me so much so that I meticulously re-recorded and released four of my albums, calling them Taylor’s Version.”
Swift acknowledged the pivotal role her fans played in this journey. “The passionate support you showed these albums and the success story you turned The Eras Tour into is why I was able to buy back my music. I can’t thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but never owned until now.”
In her comprehensive statement, Swift emphasized that she now possesses complete control of her creative work, including the music, videos, tour films, album photos, unreleased material, and the intangible essence the memories, the magic, and the madness all without restrictions.
Back in 2019, Big Machine’s decision to sell the rights to her first six albums to Braun sparked Swift’s public opposition. She claimed she was never given the opportunity to purchase her own music, which motivated her to embark on the re-recording project.
To date, Swift has released Taylor’s Version editions of Fearless, Speak Now, Red, and 1989. The re-recordings of Reputation and her self-titled debut are still in the pipeline.
In her Friday update, she admitted that work on Reputation has yet to begin in earnest. “I haven’t even re-recorded a quarter of it. The Reputation album was so specific to that time in my life, and I kept hitting a stopping point when I tried to remake it. All that defiance, that longing to be understood while feeling purposefully misunderstood, that desperate hope, that shame born snarl and mischief.”
She added candidly, “To be perfectly honest, it’s the one album in those first six that I thought couldn’t be improved upon by redoing it. Not the music, not the photos, not the videos. So I kept putting it off. There will be a time, if you’re into the idea, for the unreleased vault tracks from that album to hatch.”
However, Swift confirmed that she has completed Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version). “I’ve completely re-recorded my entire debut album, and I really love how it sounds now,” she shared. “Those two albums can still have their moments to re-emerge when the time is right, if that’s something you guys would be excited about. But if it happens, it won’t come from a place of sadness or longing. It will be a celebration.”
