Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson East offers an inside look at her time on ‘Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test’ and her interactions with fellow contestant Kody Brown.
Revealing the Group Dynamics
In an engaging Instagram Story Q&A, Johnson East shared her thoughts on the diverse personalities within the Fox reality series, sparked by a fan’s query about Kody Brown’s behavior. “Let me just say this in general as a whole — so this has nothing to do with Kody [Brown], but there were so many different personalities and styles,” said Johnson East, 33. She revealed that while some might not have bonded outside the show’s parameters, the trust and camaraderie built during challenges were invaluable. “There was not a single person casted on that show that I would not have trusted with my life in the middle of a challenge.”
Facing Tough Challenges Together
The show, featuring rigorous military-style challenges facilitated by special ops veterans, provided Johnson East unique opportunities for personal growth and team-building. “We got mixed up into different teams so much, I truly got to interact with every single person,” she explained, emphasizing the mutual support shared among contestants even when frustrations arose. “When it came to being really vulnerable and scared, every single person had my back and vice versa.”
Her husband, Andrew East, also joined the intense reality experience, bringing a new dimension to their relationship. “I would say [the show impacted our marriage] in a great way,” she mentioned, beaming with pride about their journey together. “I feel more in love with my husband, seeing how wonderful of a leader he was and how much he took care of everybody.”
Contemplating Leadership Trials
Not all moments were triumphant. Kody Brown spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about his struggles in a leadership capacity. “I was so ashamed because I just made huge mistakes in leadership. It was all just training, [but] it was embarrassing and sad,” Brown confessed, reflecting on a significant blunder he faced while teamed up with Johnson East. “In reality, if that would have been a combat situation, both of us might have been dead.”
Brown’s participation also led to friction with other recruits, including Gia Giudice, daughter of Teresa Giudice. “People had some issues with him,” noted Giudice, 24, elaborating on incidents viewers will witness where tensions were high, touching on teamwork challenges. Yet, she assures fans that she holds no ongoing resentment towards Brown.
