Bringing Alexis Bledel back as Emily in The Handmaid’s Tale’s grand finale was far from straightforward due to her hectic schedule and complex personal life. Creator Bruce Miller revealed to TV Insider on Tuesday, May 27, the intricate efforts required behind the scenes to facilitate her return. “Alexis has a complicated schedule and a complicated life, and it didn’t work out that it was a good time to do it until the end,” Miller confessed.
The core dilemma wasn’t the logical inclusion of Emily’s arc in the finale; instead, it was about fitting Bledel, 43, back into the fold given her recent retreat from the limelight. “Alexis moved heaven and earth to get up to us, and so there were a lot more practical concerns than character and emotional concerns,” he explained.
Emily’s character had been pivotal to June’s story for so long that her return was essential for the narrative closure Miller sought. He elaborated, “There was something about bringing Emily back at the end that if June was going to re-experience that part of her life, it felt like it was impossible to do without that person. Because without knowing that both of them had made it out, you couldn’t believe in the impossible being possible. But the two of them together, both being alive and free really, I think was the one thing that June and the audience really did not expect to occur. I hope.”
The Tuesday series finale captured a poignant moment where June (Elisabeth Moss) reunites with Emily post Gilead uprising. This scene harkened back to the show’s inaugural episode, where June and Emily are seen traversing along the water’s edge.
Fans were taken by surprise at Bledel’s unexpected appearance, particularly after her exit before season five. “After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time,” she shared with Variety in a 2022 statement. “I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
Post her departure, Us Weekly disclosed that Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser ended their eight year marriage. The couple first crossed paths while working on Mad Men, eventually tying the knot in 2014 and welcoming their son a year later. In August 2022, Kartheiser filed for divorce, finalizing the split later that month.
Moving away from the Hollywood spotlight, Bledel’s last credited role was indeed The Handmaid’s Tale, yet she has gingerly started re engaging with the public sphere. Just recently, Bledel committed to narrating the audiobook for Natalie Babbit’s Tuck Everlasting 50th anniversary edition. “It has been an amazing experience to revisit this world,” Bledel expressed in a statement. “Tuck Everlasting holds a special place in my heart, having played Winnie Foster in the film many years ago. Narrating this beloved story for its 50th anniversary edition is a wonderful journey back into a tale that challenges us to think about what it truly means to live a meaningful life.”
The Handmaid’s Tale is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
