Tracker’s third season premiere shook fans with surprising character exits, prompting intriguing plot developments.
Velma’s Vanishing Act
The Sunday, October 19 episode of CBS’s Tracker left audiences puzzled as Velma, portrayed by Abby McEnany, was notably absent. Reenie, played by Fiona Rene, mentioned Velma’s sudden departure to Randy (Chris Lee), saying, “Honestly, I have no idea. She went to go see [her wife] Teddi. She’s trying to save her marriage. I have a whole bunch of resumes to review this week.”
Bobby’s New Beginning
Eric Graise’s character, Bobby, also exited quietly. Randy shared the update via text message from Bobby, reading, “Thx. Miss u 2. Tell the gang I say hi.” Expanding on Bobby’s unseen journey, Randy explained, “He’s killing it. He quit his job officially at the repair shop and now he is some encryption specialist at a new startup… Between the stock options and the salary, he is bringing home the bacon.”
The Evolution of Tracker
Since its debut in February 2024 with record-breaking ratings, Tracker has captured viewers with Colter’s (Justin Hartley) relentless quests to resolve missing persons cases. As the series progressed, the dynamic cast including Teddi (Robin Weigert), Velma, Bobby, and Reenie developed rich story arcs. Weigert’s character initially exited in a similar manner, with Velma hinting at personal struggles: “[Teddi] is going to be there for a while… I was getting in the way you might say and it really wasn’t good.”
Responding to Fans
Eric Graise’s noticeable absence sparked frustration among fans, leading to his eventual temporary departure alongside McEnany. Executive producer Elwood Reid, in an exclusive with Us Weekly, addressed the evolving landscape, saying, “If I can’t evolve those characters — Randy or Reenie or Bobby — they’re not just people that just pick up the phone and go, ‘OK, here is the answer.’ That’s when the show is phoning it in.”
Reid emphasized the necessity of challenging the status quo: “The only rule I really have of the show is each week Colter is going to come to a new place and there’s going to be a new case… Meeting these [local] weird characters is something we’re going to try to do more of as the season goes on.”
Season 3 Strategies
Ahead of this season, Reid underscored the importance of avoiding simplicity in storytelling: “Justin has to carry so much of the show. So I don’t want the other characters… to just be phone-a-friend.”
Despite departures, Reenie and Randy remain integral, as Reid described, “Reenie takes a lot of the guilt [from her season 2 case] on and she’s brought Randy up there to fix it… Then we’re going to bring in another character as she tries to expand her law office a little bit.”
Reid continued, acknowledging the balance within the show’s tone: “It’s about trying to get a little bit of lightness [into the show] because sometimes Colter is doing some really dark and heavy stuff. It’s life or death.”
The strategic shifts in character dynamics promise to keep fans engaged by deepening personal storylines, ensuring Tracker stays a compelling fixture in its Sunday 8:30 p.m. ET slot on CBS, also streaming on Paramount+.
