McKenzie Rideau.
A wave of sorrow has swept through the Louisiana community * as they grapple with the tragic loss of McKenzie Rideau, a beloved high school volleyball player who was killed in a senseless shooting at a house party.
In the early hours of Tuesday, May 20, gunshots echoed through the night near Central Parkway and Overhill Drive in Lake Charles, as confirmed by the Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) via NBC affiliate KPLC.
McKenzie Rideau, just 16 years old, had her vibrant life abruptly cut short. KPLC initially described the victim as a “young lady,” later identified in a heartfelt social media post by Lake Charles College Prep as McKenzie.
Neighbors believe the gunfire originated from a short-term rental property hosting a high school graduation celebration. Witnesses told KPLC that between 30 to 50 gunshots were heard around midnight.
As of Saturday, May 24, the LCPD has not responded to inquiries from PEOPLE for further comment on the incident.
Freddie L. Harrison III, Principal at Lake Charles College Prep, honored McKenzie in an emotional tribute online:
