Mike ‘The Bodysnatcher’ McCallum, the legendary Jamaican boxing icon, has passed away at the age of 68. Renowned for his fierce dominance in the ring and powerful body shots, McCallum was widely considered one of the greatest technical fighters of his era.
According to The Jamaica Observer, McCallum fell ill on May 31 while en route to his gym in Las Vegas. He reportedly pulled over but was later found unresponsive in his vehicle. Emergency services arrived, but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The official cause of death has not yet been released.
McCallum made history in 1984 when he became the first Jamaican boxer to win a world title, defeating Ireland’s Sean Mannion at the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City. That victory launched a storied career that spanned multiple decades and solidified his place among boxing’s elite.

Throughout his career, McCallum fought in 55 professional bouts, winning 49, losing 5, and ending 1 in a draw. According to Boxing Undefeated, he achieved an astonishing 36 victories by knockout, often overwhelming his opponents with precise, punishing blows to the body.
The Jamaican fighter’s achievements included winning world championships in three different weight classes. His technical prowess and unmatched durability earned him a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003.
Paying tribute to McCallum’s impact, Jamaica’s Minister of Sport, Olivia Grange, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: “I take this opportunity to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of this legendary Jamaican.”
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was contacted by PEOPLE on June 1 for further comment. No official response has been issued at the time of reporting.
