Mr. Big (Chris Noth) and Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) in 2004 episode.
In a heartfelt revelation, Sarah Jessica Parker opened up about the emotional weight she carried after saying goodbye to Mr. Big, Carrie Bradshaw’s one true love, during the premiere of And Just Like That. His sudden on-screen passing left Parker feeling “really untethered,” as she described the experience of parting ways with a character so deeply woven into Carrie’s journey.
Played by Chris Noth, Mr. Big had been a central figure throughout Sex and the City since its 1998 debut, culminating in their iconic wedding in the 2008 film adaptation. Yet, in a surprising twist, the beloved character died of a heart attack in Carrie’s arms in the reboot’s first episode, which aired in 2021.
“It just felt really untethered. It was really sad to say goodbye to that,” Parker shared in an emotional interview with Bruce Bozzi on E! News. The grief was compounded by the real-life controversy surrounding Noth, as multiple sexual assault allegations surfaced shortly after the episode aired, claims he has strongly denied. In a show of solidarity, Parker, along with co-stars Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, issued a statement supporting the women who came forward, commending their courage in sharing such painful experiences.
Following the allegations, Noth was removed from the season finale and did not appear in any subsequent episodes. Parker candidly reflected on the dual loss, both narrative and personal, explaining, “Big dying was really really hard to do, both professionally and personally. That’s not just a thread. It’s one of the main arteries you struggle to live without.”
Though she acknowledged that her wellbeing didn’t depend on the character, she still found it difficult to let go of such a “hugely wonderful story.” It was, after all, a romance that had captivated audiences for years.
Noth later addressed the accusations in a 2023 interview with USA Today, calling them “completely ridiculous” and “without any basis in fact.” He did, however, admit to infidelity in his marriage to Tara Wilson, saying, “I strayed on my wife, and it’s devastating to her. It’s not a pretty picture. But what it isn’t is a crime.”
As the series progressed, Carrie found herself reconnecting with another significant figure from her past, Aidan Shaw, portrayed by John Corbett, whose return is confirmed for the upcoming third season.
Looking ahead, Parker expressed confidence in the creative vision behind the show. “I have such trust and faith in Michael Patrick and the extraordinary writing team,” she said on Jenna and Friends. “Even when decisions are controversial or stir big emotions, it’s incredibly fun to bring them to life. I truly love it.”
Fans can look forward to season 3 of And Just Like That premiering May 29 on HBO Max.
