In a groundbreaking move set to redefine the streaming landscape, Disney and ITV have announced a revolutionary collaboration, offering reciprocal access to their streaming platforms. This strategic partnership, unveiled on a Thursday morning and launching July 16, marks a significant shift in content-sharing synergy.
Disney+ subscribers will gain access to popular ITV shows such as Love Island and Mr Bates vs The Post Office through a curated “Taste of ITVX.” Conversely, ITVX audiences will get a “Taste of Disney magic” with hits like FX’s The Bear and Lucasfilm’s Andor. While “bundling” is a novel concept in the U.K., its prior success in France and Germany hints at a potential ripple effect across Britain’s streaming market.
Karl Holmes, Disney+ EMEA’s general manager, elaborated on the deal’s intricacies with The Hollywood Reporter. Holmes highlighted the complementary nature of their audience bases as a key driver. “This wouldn’t work if we shared the same demographics,” Holmes remarked. He noted that Disney+ primarily appeals to under-34s, while ITVX attracts over-45s and over-55s, effectively “bridging content to audiences who might not typically associate Disney with adult-focused entertainment.”
Holmes revealed that discussions with European free-to-air broadcasters have been ongoing for several months, recognizing their massive audience reach. “ITVX was the first to materialize, but we anticipate crafting similar collaborations with other broadcasters,” he stated, signaling a potential trend.
This initiative comes amid concerns from U.K. public broadcasters about the growing influence of global streaming services like Disney+, Netflix, and Apple on native TV production. Holmes believes this partnership offers a solution, stating, “For Disney+, it means showcasing our content to previously untapped audiences. It’s equally advantageous for ITVX, granting them exposure beyond their usual reach.”
Quantifying success, Holmes emphasized mutual growth, foreseeing “increased sign-ups and enhanced viewer engagement, with Disney+ patrons exploring a broader range of content.” Ongoing meetings will review engagement metrics and refresh content offerings.
When asked about replicating this model, Holmes candidly expressed enthusiasm. “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and we are keen to replicate this model with other markets.” However, he stressed that each market’s unique dynamics would guide these initiatives. Holmes distinguished ITV for its “financial robustness and sophisticated platform,” a characteristic not universally shared among European broadcasters.
As this landmark deal unfolds, Disney and ITV are poised to redefine the interaction between streaming services and traditional broadcasters, potentially setting a new prototype for future entertainment industry collaborations.
